Hi!
First, one of the threads I read when I found this site, talked about "chicken math." Well, let me tell you, it is all true...ha! We started off with six assorted chicks, and three ducks. The next day we went back for three more ducklings. (Pekins) About two and a half weeks later, once we had moved these guys to an outside hoop coop, we went back and got six Leghorns, (3 pullets, 3 straight run) and a Bantam which we FELL IN LOVE with. So....a few days later, we waited for a new shipment and went back for more bantams....they didn't have any, so we got SIX MORE assorted straight run chicks. I've lost count now, is anyone keeping up? :) And....we still plan to get more Bantams, then I think we'll be done, and just hatching our own chicks from this point on.
We have had three mishaps. One, someone left the door to the room with the brooders open, a cat got inside, lost a chick. Two, we put a small pool in with the ducks, with plenty of concrete blocks and ramps inside in case a chicken got in, still had a chicken drown. And three, the dreaded "pasty butt" which we did not learn about until it was too late. My husband and I have learned SO much from BYC....and from our own trial and error....I am even considering printing out a sheet of info for our two local feed stores for them to give out when they sell chicks and ducks. If we had known some of these things ahead of time....two chicks would still be with us.
So, in just a very short time, we've become a chicken ranch, haha...we also have two donkeys and some cats. The donkeys LOVE the ducklings, they like to stick their nose in the middle of all of them and let them pick at their whiskers. Hilarious to watch. They are their "little fuzzies" and they are super protective of them, running cats off and who knows what else in the night, although our coop is highly protected from predators.
The other funny story I have to share, is that ONE of our ducklings, (3 weeks old) has learned to quack, while all the others still peep. It is so funny to hear. I'm sure the old timers on here have experienced all of these things, but to me and my family, we are in a wonderland of new fun and love with these little fuzzies. So happy we started our "flock". And....so grateful there is a site like BYC to help us figure out how to take care of them!!
If you've read this far, thank you, nice to meet you, and I look forward to reading all the threads and maybe someday contributing some of my own knowledge!

Very nice to meet you BYCforlife! Thank you for the reply, and for counting my chickens!! hahaha. I will be posting pictures very soon, when I figure out the "egg-tiquette" on the site for photo posting. I will also be coming up with more corny chicken jokes. hehe just kidding. Well maybe not completely. :)

Lol. It is always fun cracking corny jokes! Get it? Cracked corn is a type of chicken feed

Welcome!

Thank you for a fun introduction.

I hope you enjoy being a BYC member. There are lots of friendly and very helpful folks here so not only is it overflowing with useful information it is also a great place to make friends and have some fun.

You might want to also pop in and say hello on your local thread: https://www.backyardchickens.com/f/26/where-am-i-where-are-you ‘Find your State’s thread.

If you would like to share pictures and stories of your flock, you have come to the right place. BYC’ers never tire of these and do not back away slowly or commence eye rolling when the photo album or home videos come out

Added twelve Bantams to our flock!! Sadly, one died shortly after we got it home.... Will be watching the others closely. All eating and drinking well!! I think the kids picked the color they wanted and didn't watch to see if it was a healthy chick first, it was sickly from the start. Have gotten a ton of good tips on here for Bantys and will be using all that to ensure (hopefully praise the Lord) that we don't lose anymore!! Thank you BYC and collective members for all the much needed info!! Have another awesome story to share, but I have to navigate and find the right thread for it first, hehe. Still learning!! Xoxoxo PeepsNQuacks....Jenn

Welcome!! Sorry for your losses in such a short time

Thank you!! We haven't lost anymore, (crossing fingers)....started feeding the tiny baby bantams mash...(medicated feed, water, and a tiny bit of honey stirred in) and then we also give them dry feed but crushed to bits since they can't eat the size that it comes...that seems to satisfy their desire to peck everything (sometimes each other) I'm thinking of looking for a "chicken treat" that they could peck at, or what about even one of those budgie treats, the calcium shell thing, comes from a sea critter, dang I can't remember the name...OHHH a Cuttlebone....any idea if that would be safe for them? I really don't see how it couldn't be a great idea...it's just a hunk of calcium, they need that anyway, and they could peck the heck outta that and maybe satisfy that urge? Anyone on here think this is a bad idea?

Also, we use a dollop of Braggs Organic Apple Cider in the waterers, especially for the ones still in brooders. The outsiders get it occasionally, but we don't worry about it being daily, since they are bigger. I'm gonna start drinking that stuff myself!! There's a recipe on the bottle for a health drink, with honey, etc..supposed to be really good for you!! ha!

Please...anyone who'd like to give me any advice on the cuttlebone....for tiny baby bantams only....pm me or reply to this thread!!
I'm thinking I need to create some products just for Bantys.....I'm in love with them, and there's nothing out in my area (Tractor Supply, Rural King, Hardware/feed stores) that is made for tiny tiny babies. A more finely ground feed....something for them to peck at....hmmm. I might be a millionaire....then think how many chickens and ducks I could have!!! :)
