Hi there,

I need your advice. I have a new flock of 9 chicks with their mother hen. One of the chicks is being rejected by the mother hen. This chick is the last one that hatched while she was busy attending to the others. I have the chick separated from the flock at this time because the mother hen is pecking at it. The chick is only 2 days old. Is it ok to take another baby chick from the flock and place with this alone chick to be raised together? As a buddy system?

Welcome to BYC Broody with chicks.jpeg

It is great that you are here!

Take 1 or 2 for them to brood together. Wait until Mom kicks her chicks to the curb to integrate them. Look up how to integrate them but integrating a group of at least three is much easier than 1 or 2

Welcome to BYC. Since it is so young, you could try placing the chick under the broody hen tonight in the dark, and then be out in the coop at first light to make sure she is not pecking it. Be sure and watch it for some time. Is there much difference in the ages of the chicks, or just a day or two? If that doesn't work, then I would take it back out with another chick or two.
