My husband and I started our flock about 3 years ago when someone left two hens on our (long) driveway. I put ads in the newspapers hoping to return them to their owners, but no one claimed them. Later, the feed store said it was common for people to dump unwanted birds that way.

We immediately bought our first small coop to protect them and started building an enclosure.

That morphed into a very large enclosure (expanded and added to twice more), building two large coops, learning about feeders, waterers, raising baby chicks.... we went all in.

The two that were left on our doorstep, so to speak, were a Maren and and Australop. Good layers. I can't imagine why someone didn't want to keep them.

Then we bought chicks to raise: Two barred cochins, two Columbian Wyandottes, two Buff Orpingtons, two Americanas, and two Speckled Sussex.

One of the Barred cochins turned out to be a rooster, and sadly, in his teenage hormonal stage, got rough with one of the Buff Orpington hens, causing her death. After that, he has been a nice rooster and a real beauty.

Sadly, he passed overnight. I just posted about that, wondering what could have happened. He was only two years old. We found him, already passed some hours ago, in his coop this morning.

Now, we have 10 hens. Wonderful girls who lay the best eggs we've had. We love them.

Thank you all for this wonderful group and all I've gained learning about chickens over the last three years.
