Hello Everyone! We want to learn all We can about Our 7 wonderful girls.

Hello and welcome to BYC! Glad to have you here!

This is definitely the place to be if you want to learn. My top five tips:
  1. No matter how cool and useful the raised coops might seem, they are not at all convenient if you ever need to move chickens or do any sort of health care at night... or at coop cleaning time.
  2. Straw can and will often hold a lot of moisture when used as inside bedding.
  3. Frequent health checks are a good idea - chickens are very good at hiding illness until it has progressed far enough for it to be difficult to treat, and checking them over is the best way to catch problems while they're easy to fix.
  4. Hardware cloth - always. Over any windows that you plan to leave open. As walls to the run. Underground around the run to stop anything digging.
  5. Those double-walled waterers are terrible and inconvenient once it gets below freezing, and if you bring them inside to thaw overnight, they will melt and you will end up with water all over the floor. (Yes, I have experience with exactly this lol.)

We are really enjoying our girls and want to learn everything we can to help keep them healthy, and happy. this is our first time raising chickens so we are learning as we go. We have built their home from the ground up all by ourselves. and plan to add on to their coop in the spring. we welcome any help or advise.
Welcome to BYC!!

Welcome. I am happy you have a goal to add on. More secure space in the coop and runs solves so many issues. Use hardware cloth everywhere. You don't actually have to bury your hardware cloth - you can make an apron around the perimeter of your coop and run....this is when you extend your hardware cloth - after attached at the ground - out 18-24 inches on the ground and then cover it with rock/dirt. This will keep digging predators out.
