and they are about four months old. The previouse owners allowed them to run around their yard and then they put them up for the night. We have five acres so my question is this. If I let them run will they go back themsevles or do we actually have to catch them?

Thank you.

In my experience, they learn where to go for the night. I think chickens get a bum wrap, I think they are much smarter than people give them credit for!

Oh,

from S. Florida. Do you have a coop for them? They will learn real fast, that this is "home".

That is what I was kind of hoping for! Thank you S. Florida. We are in Central FL!

We have a coupe in the works, we have 14 chicks that are just getting to an age that giving them a biggger home will be good. But right now they are safe and dry with all of this rain we have been getting.

If you keep them in the coop for about 3 days straight, not letting them out, they should return to their sleeping place on their own after that.

Welcome, and DO like tamlynn says.

While chickens do tend to get a bum rap, it is also true that they are not on the same page as we. Creatures of habit, they don't always take well to being uprooted and you can't just lay out a red carpet for them and have it mean anything.

What you consider a dandy home for them may not strike their fancy, initially. So, just turning them loose and then expecting them to come trooping merrily back may leave you hanging.

The solution is to keep them "cooped up" for a few days (thus the meaning of the term) in and/or around the coop. Also, feed and water them in there to start with, say for a week or so, until they grow accustomed to the new digs.

After that, start expanding their horizons and giving them more allowance. Eventually, move their feed and water outside the coop, protecting it from the elements. By then, they'll know where home is.

Oh, and lets hope you have a handle on predator control, now that you've moved a chicken buffet into the local habitat. Assume nothing; you may want to hang out on the predator forum for awhile.
