Hello, all readers!

I have just found out my love for chickens and I really want to get some! I am hoping to purchase baby chicks and watch them grow up! But the problem is, there is no guarantee for a female chick to be always tested the correct gender (as in, a chance to get a rooster), and my area does not allow any roosters at all. I don't want to get a rooster, either. I just want some ladies for their eggs. How do I make sure I don't get roosters? I don't want to get pullets, I would really like chicks!

Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated!

Thanks!

Get sex link chicks. They are 100% sexed correctly. You can order several different varieties of sex link from any hatchery. Red Star, Black Star, or Golden Comet.

x2 on Jillscoop. If you go with a sex link breed, you should not have to worry about it.

Thank you so much! But what about the others? I guess I could start with just sex-links, that isn't too bad. I just wanted to try different chick breeds, but, it seems like a great idea!

The sex links are the best way to go if you want to start with chicks, either the black or the red (or a mix of both, that would be pretty). They are hybrids (not a true breed) and they are egg laying machines. I think Cream Legbars and Bielefelders are auto-sexing breeds but both of these tend to be pricey and may not be easy to find.

The sex links are less expensive, great egg layers, wonderful birds if your main concern is getting eggs. We have 3 RSL's in our mixed flock and they are some of the most entertaining chickens we have.

Good luck to you, thanks for joining us!

Sex links are the best since you do NOT want roosters. Most people don't either, that is why there is a glut of roosters looking for new homes. Sadly most end up on the dinner table, as guest of honor.
