I'm also new to BYC... I inherited a chicken when it got chewed up by a coyote and couldn't go back in the neighbour's coop as the other chickens would have pecked at its wounds. After it healed we snagged another chicken from the coop and installed both of them in a big dog kennel for their own safety at night and free ranged them in our yard during the day. Eventually the neighbour got rid of all his chickens, so now the girls are spending the winter in his coop as the dog kennel wasn't roomy enough for an all winter home. They still come over to our house for their free ranging on nice days, and we take them back across the road for nighttime. I love my girls and look forward to building our own coop and expanding the family a bit!
