Thank you NorthFLchick! I truly appreciate your good wishes. We have ducks too. We have 14 laying Welsh Harlequin females and an African Guard Gander with them. We raised them all together as day old. The goose is really protective of the ducks and nothing will get to them without having to go through him. And he is no joke! Best of luck to you with your new ducky additions this Spring.

I'm getting a mix of breeds and one of them is a Welsh Harelquin (the rest are Blue Indian Runners, Blue Swedish, Pekin, Buff, Cayuga, Khaki Campbell and a hybrid). I never thought about having a goose to watch over the ducks, I bet he is a good protector.

The duck forum here has a lot of helpful members on it, you'll have to check it out. One of the things that sold me on trying the ducks were the duck breed focus threads, you might like to see some of them:

Thank you for the information. I surely will check it out. I have been thinking lately of getting some Muscovy ducks. They are a bit cleaner than other breeds of ducks in terms of mucking water and not needing much water in general other than for drinking. They are very self reliant and strong flyers. In other words, they can take good care of themselves for the most part. We used to raise them back home in Cuba and they are one of the tastiest ducks you will ever eat. If you are a meat eater, of course!

Muscovy's were one of the ducks on the breed focus threads. I believe one of our super helpful members by the name of Miss Lydia has some (in addition to others). If you have any Muscovy questions, she might be able to help you out.
