Hello there, I found this site looking for info on what scraps to feed my chickens. Excellent information and glad to see I have been doing something right with them. I purchased 11 commercial layers (not sure of the exact breed this is what the farm told me they were) 5 weeks ago. They started laying around 10 days ago and the past week I have been gifted between 5-7 eggs per day! I love my chickens and will be introducing 11 more in the next few weeks.

Thanks for a great site and hope to learn and contribute on this forum.

Here is a quick pic of some of my ladies.

What adorable ladies you have! Welcome to BYC!

Thank you both :). Yes they are adorable aren't they, I am very new to owning chickens, I recently managed to acquire myself an allotment which came with a large pen and coup all ready to use. I am learning gradually and yes thank you so much - your info on what to feed what not feed was very informative. The girls seem happy enough although I may have got them into bad habits as whenever I go in there to give them water etc they flock around my feet thinking I'm bringing treats ha. I treat them once a week with a stick of rhubarb from the allotment and also mix in their own dried crushed eggshells in with some layers pellets on occasion. They don't seem to like leafy green scraps from the allotment but love carrots and breadcrumbs! They really are adorable and have leant quickly to go into the coop at night, I have to go down at dusk and lock them up and then up at dawn to let them out as I live in the country (UK) and foxes are everywhere.

Thanks for the warm welcome everyone, this is a great site I'm learning a lot from the forums also. I will take a look at the UK threads thank you.

I'll have to upload some pictures of my ladies when I can. They are giving me 8-10 eggs per day now, I have been giving them to people in the village and they love them.

Once the town finds out you have home grown farm fresh eggs, people will beat your door down to get them. LOL
