In the Brooder
I've already introduced myself in the Central California thread, so I thought I should swing by here and say hello to the rest of the community.
My name is Steve, and like I said, I live in Central California (Modesto to be exact) with my fiance and her 11-year-old son. We are new to raising chickens.
I've been researching online, and watching more chicken YouTube videos than I care to admit, but I wanted to make 100% sure that this was an adventure we would be willing to take before we took that first step. Last Saturday we took the plunge. We started our clutch with 4 chicks. We have a Black Australorp, a Silver Laced Wyandotte, a Barred Plymouth Rock, and a Speckled Sussex.
Here is a pic of them on their ride home from the feed store.

We have had them for 4-days now. Their little wing tip feathers are starting to develop. They are super cute.

Currently we do not have a coop, but I have already drawn up plans for a nice structure that will look handsome in our backyard while being functional. I have a wood shop at home so I already have most of the materials for the coop.

I based my plans off of this coop that I found online.

I plan to make a few modifications. I'm going to split the door in half and screen it, so that I can open the top half of the door on warm days for ventilation. I also plan to add a second window on the back wall, both of which will be able to open for ventilation. I will take lots of pictures as I go, so that I can share them with you all. My fiance asked me to add a little flower box beneath the window so that she can plant some pretty flowers. I've been a carpenter for the majority of my life, so this little structure will be super easy for me. I'm really looking forward to getting started on it.
We are super excited about this new journey and we look forward to the day that we have our first eggs.
