Hello Everyone!
I've just signed up to the forums and am looking forward to chatting with you all about all things chicken.
(1) I am relatively new to chickens but in the past I kept and bred a number of parrot varieties so am familiar with bird care, breeding and genetics. Back when I lived in an urban area, I purchased a very young pair of sebright hens and hand raised them. They were the perfect duo to have free ranging in my yard and were spoilt rotten by both us and the neighbours. We have since moved into the country and the area that is their chicken run is so large that I decided it would be a fantastic plan to add to the flock
(2) We now have 10 hens and 1 rooster. We have our two sebright hens, one unknown breed bantam cross (an oold hen that was already here when we arrived and who adopted my sebrights on arrival), 7 pekin hens (various colours) and 1 pekin rooster.
(3) Also currently frequenting our chicken paddock are a family of weka. Two of this seasons youngsters have become very familiar and if you stand still they'll come and peck at your shoes. They are usually the first to gather round when the kitchen scraps are being dished out. Despite their friendliness, and my fondness for them, I am in the process of weka-proofing the chicken area because they have been stealing eggs from the hen house and I'm certain they would also predate on chicks if given an opportunity. They will still have access to the orchard and the area adjacent to the chickens and I'll be sure to save some kitchen food for them too.
(4) I found out about BackYardChickens.com via internet searches. I'm doing my homework into the pekin colours and genetics because I love working out what genetics I have. I'm not at all set up for having multiple pens so I will not be undergoing any notable breeding programs, but as much as I can, i'd like to make informed choices when selecting/keeping chicks to refresh my flock.
(5) Regarding other hobbies - I am also a hobby photographer, I like getting the camera out into nature, and am currently learning to sail a small two man yacht which is awesome fun!
(6) My husband and I own a dairy farm and I am a Chartered Accountant. I currently share my time between contracting out my accounting services (I work remotely via my home office), helping my husband run the dairy, and keeping our family clean and fed (three teenagers plus a working husband = lots of washing and food hehe). We have 3 cats (all rescues or wild cats that have adopted us), our chickens, and about 400 dairy & beef cows, several of which are very tame and get special love and attention.
I'm very much looking forward to chatting away on the forums and getting to know a few like minded people!!
Cheers
