I got my start raising poultry with my grandmother when I was very young, but I didn't have my own chickens until I was in my late 20s. My first flock was chickens and Muscovy ducks on an island in the Pacific. I even imported Australorps and white leghorns there and bred them to sell eggs and chicks. When I moved back to the mainland, to northern California, I found some Muscovies and have been keeping those for the last couple years. We added Pekin ducks this year. Now we are moving to a new property with a lot more room and I am getting chickens again! This time I am purchasing a small flock of Barbezieux from a friend, and some other breeds from the feed store next month.
Our Muscovies are for eggs (and lawn mowing services), Pekins we will breed next year to build a meat flock, the Barbs are going to be a side project just to keep a rare breed, and everything else is a bonus bird. I'm more of a utility bird keeper type than a pet chicken keeper type. I've been searching the forums for things before and it almost seems like every subject has been covered, but I know there's always something new to discuss and I'm excited to participate now!
