Hello everyone!

Hi there, happy to join the community from way over in the French Alps :)

As I'm generally not much good with presentations, here are my answers to your fantastic template.

(1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens?
I had a couple of hens a while back, but moved to a flat and had to rehome them.
We bought an old farmhouse in december that we are currently renovating, complete with a brick coop, and I treated myself to my first pullets for my birthday in march.

(2) How many chickens do you have right now?
At the moment I have eight hens, one roo and seven chicks.

(3) What breeds do you have?
A couple of german faverolles.
Leghorn.
Silkie (whoops, forgot about her and had to edit)
A sort of mixed breed easter egger.
French heritage breeds : Gournay, Marans.
Two bantam cochins.
The chicks are all splash bantam cochins except for one golden salmon marans.

(4) What are your favorite aspects of raising backyard chickens?
Yummy fresh eggs, obviously, and also just watching them scratch around the garden, soooo relaxing!

(5) What are some of your other hobbies?
Animals, in all shapes and sizes.
And at the moment I am very into the work we are doing on our new home :)

(6) Tell us about your family, your other pets, your occupation, or anything else you'd like to share.
We have a cat, and an adorable two year old Cane Corso who does very well with her new feathered friends, she just loves hanging out with them.

(7) Bonus: How did you find BYC, how long have you known about BYC, and what made you finally join our awesome community?
Basically, looking up stuff on google, french resources are very poor and forums are not very active, but you guys are an awesome chickcylopedia, I'm so happy to join the community!
Welcome! Gournay, golden splash marans? I don’t think I’ve heard of those! Are they common where you are? I just want one of everything...

Thanks everyone! Yes the pup is a big asset with the hens and is very protective of them, she chases away intruders from crows to neighborhood dogs. I don't know if it's verified but I always try to make her do her business around the coop to keep the foxes away.:lau

@Mixed flock enthusiast ditto on wanting one of everything! The Gournay is probably one of the oldest french breeds, always black mottled, good dual purpose bird, very energetic and quite elegant. They are kind of rare even here because the french aren't too keen on the pure white colour of the shells on eggs, silly them.
I don't have any nice pics of her but here's a rubbish one so that you can get a rough idea, she's 6 months old and should start laying any day now...unless she's a he. :barnie

And the marans is a golden salmon colour, I think it's what's called the "wild type". I was thrilled that the chick hatched that colour, first of all because it's quite rare, and second because their eggs are supposed to be the darkest amongst the marans, so I really hope little Nuggets is a pullet!

And here's a pic of the hen house, as I said it needs a good bit of work done on it, we already re-did the fencing and will be renovating it step by step (the next theone being roof)

Thanks of the pic of your lovely Gournay! I hope it’s a girl too! If it’s six months old and not crowing and mounting hens, that seems encouraging! Your marans sounds fascinating - I’d love to see pics of it and any eggs that it ends up laying! I hope that your chicken keeping continues to be so idyllic and that your Cane Corso continues to keep your flock safe - I know that I wouldn’t want to tangle with one!

@Mixed flock enthusiast the Corso is actually a real softie with people and anything else when she isn't on chicken guard duty, but shhhh, don't tell anyone :p
The Gournays are tough because they tend to have very developed attributes, male and female alike, but so far no crow nor egg, it's wait and see I guess.
I created a thread for the marans over here where I'll be posting pics of him/her if you want to follow https://www.backyardchickens.com/threads/golden-salmon-marans-born-june-the-11th.1317110/

@sourland thank you!

Oh, cute little guy or gal!!! A marans chick with chipmunk stripes, huh? I’ll have to google for a pic of the adult!
