Welcome, from Alabama. And yes a good saline rinse if it seems to be causing him irritation, beyond that not much you can do. If the damage caused him to loose sight int hat eye, then he won't get it back, which could explain why he holds it closed so often. The cruddy mucus is probably a related situation, lack of vision in the eye prevents him from blinking as often and such, therefore it has a chance to build up. It's probably harmless, but if it appears to be causing irritation just a good old fashioned cleaning should be sufficient care.
