My husband Geoff, son Garrett, and I live in Shoreline WA, just north of Seattle. Our family has talked about raising chickens for years now. Then this guy posted an ad on Craigslist for free chicks...and so it started! We took home 3 mixed breeds(Aracauna, Leghorn, Austrolorp were the possible parents) and improvised with a laundry basket, heat lamp from our snake-rearing days, and hamster bedding. Went to the Co-op for proper supplies and came home with 2 barred rock chicks. The next day, I came home from work to find 5 more babies-Red Sexlink, Black Sexlink, White Plymouth Rock, Delaware, and Austrolorp.

All are happy and healthy in my computer room til they are ready for life outside. From what i've been reading, we have about two weeks to get our coop built-time to get cracking!

I appreciate all the info I get from this site and recommend it to my growing number of friends curious about raising chickens in the city. I am awaiting my shipment of DE and can't wait to see all its usefulness. I look forward to having the most amazing soil on the block. And I look forward to reading about everybody's adventures with their flocks on here!

Sounds like your are a victim(?) of spontaneous generation - all these chicks popping up to surprise you. Think your husband needs to make the coop quite a bit bigger than you plan. Seems to happen to most people, chicks add up pretty fast, it's called "chicken math," on here. We are all enablers, so you may as well give in..

With great sadness, I am offering 2 eleven week old roosters to anyone that can pick them up. They started crowing a few days ago. I am in Shoreline, just north of Seattle. My city ordinances allow me to keep them, but I want to keep things civil with my neighbors.
