I always went to the website for answers so I finally joined. We now starting our second batch of chicks. Had good luck with the first batch. They are so friendly. The second one is not as friendly, but I haven't had as much time to handle them. I do have a question though. Our first batch have been great layers until the past month. They are not laying as many eggs. I thought it might be because they are molting. Our Leghorn will lay, not as much, but when she does, it is always broken when we go in. At first we thought it was accidentally, but it has been every time now. Could they be getting a taste for their eggs?

Moulting will cause a bird to slow down or even stop laying until it is over.

As far as the Leghorn breaking the eggs, are the egg shells thinner and more breakable than they used to be? Maybe she needs more calcium in her diet. They can lay soft shell eggs when they are moulting too.

Here's a link that discusses egg issues and their possible causes, maybe you'll find this helpful:

Nice to have you here, hope all works out soon.

Hi :welcome

Glad you could join the flock! Great advice there for you from NorthFLChick and drumstick diva that they may need more calcium in their diet. Also if you do have an egg eater here is an article with tios on how to stop them https://www.backyardchickens.com/a/six-tips-on-breaking-your-egg-eater

Good luck with your flock in the future. Be sure to ask any other questions you may have, everyone here to help and very friendly.
Enjoy BYC and all the chicken chat :frow
