I am New to the forum and raising chickens. I have a black molted Japanese bantam hen and rooster and a Japanese buff bantam hen pullet. I lost my previous rooster 2 weeks ago. My hen (Ann) laid an egg the next day so I decided to see if she'll go broody. I read that the eggs can be fertile for 2 weeks after the removal of a rooster, so I'm pretty positive that the eggs she's laying are fertile. She has 9 eggs so far and today makes 2 weeks that she's been laying. My new rooster (Little Man) is still young and trying to win her over. My question is since she's been laying for 2 weeks and has 9 eggs, are the eggs that she laid first still any good? Will she go broody soon if at all? Thanks in advance

Hi :welcome

Glad you could join the flock! Sorry to hear you lost your roo a couple of weeks ago :hugs
Is she a new layer? Sometimes pullet eggs are not the best for hatching as the young pullet is still getting all her laying machine in order and egg production right. A week after being laid eggs fertility can start to diminish, it's advisable to incubate eggs that are a week old or younger. I'm afraid you can't make a hen go broody but you could try and encourage it by adding golf balls or fake eggs to the nest box but if they are not in the mood for being broody you can't make them, especially if your girl is young.

Good luck and enjoy BYC :frow

She's not a first layer. She's hatched before but she was my cousins when she did. I recently got her from him and I was wondering how long her eggs are good for. I read somewhere on here that some hens lay 15 in a clutch, that means that the first egg laid is at least 15 days old
