I grew up with chickens, but did not have a lot of hands on with them. Now several years later, I have been helping my neighbor establish a flock. The first week of March I ventured out on my own and bought 15 chicks (14 survived). She is moving soon and I will be inheriting her 16 chickens and 12 Silkies
As for breed, I am not sure. There are only 5 that I can confirm their breed (I just got them today from my boss, chicks). They are Americana.

There are several reasons I have decided to raise chickens. The first is that they are just so enjoyable to watch. Second is the eggs. Who really would not like to have fresh free ranged eggs. Lastly, they help keep the bug population in check.

As for me and mine, I am a happily single male with a loving 3 years old pug and a cat I see when she needs something that is 2 1/2. Which brings me to a point. I was a little concerned about the cat's interaction with the chickens. Well, she really does not care that they are around. She actually just stays out of their way. They are aware of her and just stay on notice when she is in the area.

I have really enjoyed the threads and the info i have gleaned over the last 2 years. Now that I have questions and need to post to threads, I decided to join up. Not a very social person. (May be the reason I am single.)
