Hello fellow chicken folks!.... A comment on Scissor beak

...I wanted to bring up the issue of scissor beak. One of my babies started showing signs of it at 5 days old.

From what I've read, the earlier it shows up the more severe it can be.

In addition to the special feeding one can do there is also the possibility of correcting the malformed beak!! I will be taking my Sybil to a veterinary dentist to have her beak realigned using an acrylic appliance. It's fairly commonly done on the large birds such as cockatoos & Macaws with scissor beaks...
AZ Banshee, Thanks for letting us know about the possible option of the large bird beak appliance. I have a black sex link pullet with this problem. She started showing at about 8 weeks, and it is more pronounced now, but she shows no other abnormalities. She seems to eat okay still, but today I filled a feeder instead of just tossing grain on the ground and let her eat from that. I think I'll check into the acrylic appliance, and just band her leg so I know not to set her eggs when she starts laying this fall. I got her and the BSL roo and another BSL pullet from Atwoods, so I'll be letting them know, and I may not keep that roo since they are most likely from the same bloodline. What a shame. I discovered today that one of my BA's is a roo, those nice pointed tail coverts! I am very pleased about that. I have at least 30 hens when all these mature, so could probably have 2 roos, just don't think I can split my yard to keep them apart if I wanted to divide them. I may hatch some from the BSL roo just for meat birds since he's a chunky guy! But kind of afraid to propagate them otherwise now. Never saw scissor beak before. Had chickens for over 10 years here and when I was a kid. People probably just culled and didn't talk about it much. Hope you will keep us posted.
