So I am not really new to BackYardChickens.com, I have been visiting here daily for the last two months. I really like the sense of community on here and peoples willingness to share their expertise (especially with the hard questions).
About Me:
I am a city kid that spent a lot of time on my Grandma and Grandpa's farm growing up. They farmed corn, raised cattle, pigs, and chickens. To tell you the truth, collecting eggs was my least favorite chore on the farm when I was little. I'd grab my big red/green rubberized metal basket on one arm, and carefully line up my other arm in an attempt to plan the perfect snatch and move maneuver. My goal was to get in and out with the goods without being pecked. Well, I don't know if I moved too slow or those broody birds were just plain mean, but I took my fair share of pecks! To be fair, they were not pets per say.
A couple of months ago my husband mentioned being interested in keeping chickens. Flashbacks instantly flooded my brain of being repeatedly pecked and occasionally chased by an ornery Roo. But my husband convinced me to come meet our neighbors backyard flock and I instantly fell in love. They were beautiful and friendly. So after that my hubby and I laid out some ground rules....okay I laid some ground rules out. Rule #1 - If I hand raise a little critter, it is a pet. Rule #2 - We do not eat pets in civilized society. Rule #3 - Pets are family and will be treated with the same dignity and care that we are accustomed to.
Our neighbors happened to be hatching out some chicks and let us have first pick. It was so amazing to see these little chicks work their way into the world, fluff up and hop around. We sexted them (to the best of our ability) and adopted 8-hens (hopefully). Meanwhile Bill got to work on our coop. Bill set forth to convert our St. Bernard's handmade double walled house that she never took too into the roosting and nesting house. After he mounted it, he created a nice sized run for our little flock to be during the day while we are at work.
The girls are amazing. They're a little over 8-weeks now and have their pecking order well established. One of our girls is currently in our make-shift sick/injury bay in the house. I think she may have tried to squeeze out a small gap in our wire mesh, got caught and subsequently pecked by her sisters. Thank goodness I had your posts to tell me what I should keep in my chicken first-aid kit and how to treat an injury! My sweet girl is healing up really well.
Anyway, I look forward to interacting with other fellow chicken geeks such as myself.
