I just got my first chickens about 3 weeks ago. Someone at my husbands work gave him a hen and her 4 chicks. Unfortunately we were not well prepared and we're just letting them free range and lost two chicks one night. Lesson learned. Found an old rabbit hutch online the next day and just finished it today with the help of my Father. I am very proud. I know it isn't much to look at but it's very special to me. The chickens checked it out immediately and the Momma hen, Alice, gave a sweet purr. The chicks went up the ramp in no time but Alice hasn't attempted it yet. Thinking I might need to make the hole bigger at the top of the ramp. Anyways, thanks for all the posts! I've learned so much from BYC!!!! I don't know what I would've done without all the knowledge I've found from this site!

We're never really met but I like Alice already

I hope her chicks turn out to be girls. When they are about 6-8 weeks old you can post individual photos of them at "what breed or gender is this." Welcome to Backyard chickens.

Alice is such a sweet girl! And a great Momma. I love watching her teach them things.
I just took my flashlight outside and checked on them and Alice made it up the ramp to her nest! She has the chicks tucked under her wings as usual which is quite funny because they've gotten quite big. Their lttle heads popped out to say hi to me.
Can't wait to post to the what breed amd sex are they forum in a couple weeks! I'm curious to what Alice is and her chicks look nothing like her at this point. Thanks!

Welcome to BYC!

Nice introduction, thank you for the added photos. It sounds like you have a great little mom in Alice. As for the chicks not looking like her, chicks colors can change a lot as they grow (and of course depending on what their father was). I'd love to see a picture of the chicks if you'd like to share. I'm sorry you lost 2 of them, unfortunately, it happens and we just have to learn from it.

If you have any questions, feel free to ask. There is so much information available on BYC and a lot of friendly, helpful members.

Thanks for joining us!

Haha! I named her and Peepers after characters from a stupid funny show I watch with my husband on Comedy Central called Another Period.

LOL! I thought maybe some little kid named her. Hang around BYC long enough and you'll hear all kinds of names (but I think yours is the first Chair).
