Haven't had chickens for 30 years, but got a backyard flock of 6 ready to lay hens just 3 days ago. We have a veggie garden and I can for the winter, try to buy locally raised meat (and eat less of it) and have been buying free-run eggs for the past while but no one has them close to us, so we decided to get our own. When I had chickens before, they ran loose, laid their eggs wherever, and roosted at night in with the goats (we don't have goats anymore). This time, we've built a chicken tractor for the summer and will have a permanent winter coop inside our garage before the Canadian winter hits us...a whole different story than our last venture...and I'm thirty years older.
