Howdy! We are new to raising chickens and lost four of the first batch we bought to coccidiosis. (We think!) After reading about it online, that's the conclusion we came up with as they fit the symptoms we read about. So then we got seven Rhode Island Reds who seem to be the epitomy of health. They have been scratching since we got them and they are so much fun to watch. But the first batch we got, (three each of Red Stars, and Leghorns) never did scratch. In fact, one of the two survivors just did start scratching. Hopefully they will all live to be healthy, egg producers.

Welcome to BYC!

Sorry about your first flock. These things can happen. Just make sure to keep everything very clean and dry and cocci is less likely to happen.

You might want to stop by this section of our learning center on keeping your flock healthy...
