I usually only lurk around forums, soaking up information... but thought I'd take a chance and say , Hi!

I'm new to the whole chicken scene, although my husband's (username grungybones here) family kept chickens when he was young. We have a cute and incredibly sturdy new coop(my hubby never does anything by halves), hehe. And 9 young ladies and one gent that are just about ready to move in, and three new little babies that the hubby couldn't resist came home to the brooder box. One of our little "teens" is playing mommy and cuddling and hovering over them. It's so cuuuute, but I'm guessing I'll have to watch out for her going broody.

We have two young girls of our own, one 13 yr. old and one 15. Our 15 year old is autistic and she's half scared of all animals and at the same time loves babies animals ... and we'd been wanting to do chickens for a while, so we made the leap this spring. I think she is enjoying it... hard to tell sometimes, but she can say chicken very well now and normally she doesn't do much talking, so that's gotta mean something.

Excited and nervous about our first chickens... Would not have believed how attached I could get to them already. Hope everything goes smoothly

, our neighbors have some big dogs and there are all kinds of wild critters, racoons, possums, weasels, and coyotes nearby... we live on the edge of civilization.

from Washington! I believe you'll be fine - It often depends how your chickens are housed. Heck, we free range ours in the middle of nowhere which usually gets a lot of predator problems. . . But I think the fact that our chickens blend into the surrounding "pasture" so well and also that we have a "guard Yak" help us to a predator problem percentage of 0.

I felt the same way.

Chickens will be great for your autistic daughter. They are so forgiving. Hopefully she will eventually be able to handle them. Best of luck with your new project!

Isn't it crazy how attached you become????
The kids enjoy them so much too. When one of my older boys was in high school we kept some chickens for friends that evacuated their home due
to the fires (California). Every day he'd come home, so excited to go get the eggs. He begged me to get chickens but I had a toddler and too much
on my plate then. I'm finally able to have them and now I ask myself why did I wait so long???

Illia...I hope they will be safe enough, my dear hubby has been building me a fort knox of chicken coops, but I could wish for enough room to have my own guard yak. I think it would make me feel safer over all.

Cambriagardener... It took a while for her to warm up to dogs, but just a couple weeks ago she was cuddling and saying "I love you" to great grandpa's dachshund. So I have high hopes with the chickens!(and if Jaws does turn out to be a boy, maybe we can keep him and have a semi steady supply of new babies to love).

Knockkneedhen... Thank you! that hubbyo'mine has been a slave driver, but its almost done! And we are hoping the big girls can move in tomorrow. I think they were a little cranky that they didn't get to go out and play, because we were working on it. Btw love your signature!
