Hello We are Jennifer and Scott, new to raising chickens. Currently we have a White leghorn (Pearl), 2 silver lace wyandots (Lacy and Scratch), 1 Buff Oprington (Apple) and 2 Silkies (Mallow (white or splash) & Blue (Blue Malu). They are about a month old and we are current'y in the process of building a temporary coop for them. I am excited to see what sex the silkies are. Blue is a towerhouse and it makes me nervous. Are silkie roosters loud? I sure hope not.. I really want to keep Blue Malu, I have grown attached.

I have been cruising the site and I have to say Thank you to everyone who is apart of this site. It has been most helpful!

I do have a few questions while I am here and introducing myself. #1 When is is safe to move the chicks outside to a coop? #2 I live in Barstow, Ca and the heat has been fierce, will they be okay outside?

Thanks,
Jenn

chicks are usually ready to move out to the coop when they are fully feathered. You will need a lot of shade in your hot weather, either manufactured or lots of trees which I imagine you aren't going to find in the desert.. Some people put out gallon jugs of frozen water, the chickens can lay near. Fans out of reach of the chickens can help, as can some ice in the waterers. Extra treats of watermelon are usually welcomed .

You can go to "where am I, where are you," to find your state thread and post on it. The locals can give you better suggestions and info. about type of coop you would need. I know in really hot areas some people use open air(wire coop walls) or a coop with two solid walls, and two wire ones to aid air circulation.
