    Hi guys!
My name is Ashley and I have a bit of an urban farm here in Not-So-Sunny Eureka, CA! It's so cloudy & mild year 'round that I can't grow tomatos or other hot weather plants but CAN grow cabbage, kale etc. all year without it bolting.... [IMG]
I'd like to get bees next! Then rabbits and fowl other than chickens. I have one fat cat that used to be a skinny alley cat.
I had 4 Buff Orpington hens at one time (my landlord brought them to her ranch for a bit to breed with her roosters and then her dog killed a few--she paid me back in some other hens).
My flock has dwindled with one hen that went M.I.A. Two other hens died suddenly (months apart) from what seemed like a heart attack. My fiance was primary care at the time (I was working a lot) and was feeding them soley cracked corn during some bad storms and they weren't getting out of the coop much...[IMG] My dad did an autopsy on the last hen that died and said she was very clean inside (no broken glass or rat poison or anything) but she was FAT FAT FAT on the inside... I have since taken the reins with the chicks. My poor fiance didn't know better....
Anyway, we have since bought three chicks: one gold laced wyandotte, one light brahma, and one barred rock! I love having the chicks inside! They are about 6 weeks now and we are putting them out in the coop during the day and bringing them in @ night. Our orpington goes out in the yard when the chicks are in the coop. She's protective of the chicks--she chases the cat when he gets too close (even though he's afraid of her and everything else). I think they have some pecking order issues that will be resolved when they are integrated in the next couple weeks...
    So that's my current story!
I love this site and looking forward to using it more frequently!!
