Hi there!

We're getting back into the chicken thang and came across this wonderful site.

I used to raise Buff Orpingtons. They're still a favorite, but the current flock is Speckled Sussex. While they seem to grow slower than the Orps, they make up for it by being great companions. I have my coffee every morning with them. So far the only challenge they've presented is moving the mug out of the way fast enough when one feels like being on my lap. Great chickens.

Anyways, looking forward to sharing experiences here!

Hi! Welcome! I have a little one that looks a lot like yours that's on the far left in your picture! I was wondering what she could be! I'll have to go to the woman I bought the fertile eggs from, and ask her if she has any of these. I basically bought fertile eggs to put under my broody hen so she could do her thing. And she did and is doing great with them! They are just a barnyard mix and this is the odd ball of the bunch!

Thank you!

Your little one's a cutie. Being an oddball is a good thing. :)

After failing terribly at incubating a batch of duck eggs this week, I very much look forward to having a broody hen or two around, lol.

Welcome to BYC. Glad you decided to join our flock. I love Buff Orpingtons and Speckled Sussex. Both breeds are friendly and gentle and good layers of large brown eggs. My children made lap pets of both breeds. If you haven't done so already, definitely our Learning Center at https://www.backyardchickens.com/atype/1/Learning_Center. There is loads of useful information there. Please feel free to ask any questions you may have. We are here to help in any way we can. Good luck with your SS flock.

Yep! We love our little odd ball! She's so cute!
So sorry about your loss on the duck eggs. Having a broody hen has been awesome for me! Mainly I just wanted to see if she could/would hatch out some babies. She did and she's an awesome mom to boot!
Good luck on your next batch!

Love your photo. So jealous. Sussexes definitely top my wish list for the next time around. They're so beautiful, and everything I read about their personalities sounds wonderful. And it looks from your pic that's it's true, too!
