(1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens?
I started raising chickens in 2013 while living in the city but have moved out of the city on an acre of land so I can now have as many as my land can hold.
(2) How many chickens do you have right now?
Questions 2&3 will be answered as one.
2 Rhode Island Red hens
2 buff Orpington hens
2 Barred Rock hens
1 Australorp hen
1 Cinnamon Queen hen
2 Banty/Ameraucana mixed hens
1 polish hen (she is a sweetie)
2 mixed breed roosters
4 Bronze Turkeys
1 pair Cayuga ducks
4 Female Muscovy ducks
2 male Muscovy ducks
(3) What breeds do you have?
(4) What are your favorite aspects of raising backyard chickens?
Fresh eggs, source of food, pest control, and watching them
(5) What are some of your other hobbies?
I love my Mini Nubian goats who supply delicious milk. I also raise meat rabbits (2 bucks, 4 does)
(6) Tell us about your family, your other pets, your occupation, or anything else you'd like to share.
My 2 children are grown but I have 2 grandchildren. My pets are 1 Siamese cat, 2 chihuahuas, and of course my polish chicken who is always at my feet when I am outside.
I must also give recognition to my trusty Livestock Guardian Dog. I have not lost one animal since he came to our homestead. Shep is 1/2 Komondor, 1/4 Great Pyrenees, 1/4 Anatolian Shepherd. Although he is a handful and we dare not leave anything out for him to rip apart and leave all over the yard, he has kept the pack of coyotes, skunks, raccoons, and even the hawks out of our yard. Even a sparrow flying overhead does not escape his scolding.
(7) Bonus: How did you find BYC, how long have you known about BYC, and what made you finally join our awesome community?
A friend told me about this site. Thank you Teresa Greer.
