Hi!

I am fairly new to chickens, though we had a few bantam cochins one time at another place.

I have wanted to get chickens for moths but have been waiting for my husband to create a coop. He's finally started to move dirt around to put the coop on, so there's starting to be some progress.

When I get chickens again this time, after lots of study, I'd like to get gentle but well producing chickens. I really want one Buff Orpington (or an orpington mix) and one Black Australorp.
Others I am considering are a Red Star/Buff/Golden Comet, Ameraucana or Easter Egger,
Jersey Giant.

I may consider a plymouth rock or Delaware or a Rhode Island Red but it depends because I have read a lot of mixed things about those three personality-wise (seems like some birds of each are aggressive and some are friendly and sweet).

If you live within 30-45 miles of the Starke/Lawtey area in North Florida and tend to have any of these birds from time to time (especially the Buff Orpingtons, Black Australorps, Buff/Red Stars/Golden Comets, or Easter Egger or Ameraucanas, please let me know or check back with me. Since I probably won't be buying these in the Spring (unless it takes my husband that long to build the coop), I am just trying to find some good sources.

Thanks,

Sylvia

Welcome aboard! I've been doing chickens for just a year now, and I love them. I have 7 chickens and 6 different breeds. I like the variety. Nice lawn decoration. Our friendliest by far is our barred plymouth rock...she's like a feathery puppy. Our Easter eggers are very social, too. Our others like to see us coming with treats, and aren't flighty, but they're more stand-offish.

Have fun! Send your husband to the coop part of the forum for inspiration!

we had our chicks before our coop was built! That is probably a smarter way to go by getting your coop built first. We have 2 BO's out of six chicks and they are my favorite. Very friendly and social...Good luck

Thanks to you--all all best wishers (since I probably shouldn't post Thanks a bunch of times).

I promised my little girl I'd get her a buff, so at least one of them has to be a buff.
