Uh... that is my great concern. Thank you!Welcome to BYC - good luck with your chicks. Have a plan 'B' in mind in case predators start attacking your free range flock. A back up pen may be a good idea for temporary.
There are no raccoons in our regions, foxes live in forests that are not very close, but the great danger are stray dogs, which have repeatedly slaughtered chickens in our neighborhood (probably unthinkable in the US). That's why we enforced fence of backyard. Cats can enter the yard, over the fence. I hope they are not a serious threat.
I have no plan for protection from predators from the air. I did not hear about such cases in this area. Of course, this is always possible, but I have no idea how to prevent that. If I put the network up, then I have to reduce their space. And that's a shame, since they have the opportunity to enjoy the large space, without destroying vegetation.
Chicken have the shelter of the trees, or the option to run in their henhouse, close to them is always open garage and basement... Maybe that's enough.
