I've been a Lurker-who has learned so much. We purchased our flock from the feed store when my kids and I could not refuse the chicks. We could not decide on a specific breed so we brought home 4 of each (Production Red, Ameracauna, Golden Laced Wyandotte) intending on sharing some chicks with our neighbor.
I found BYC forum after we noticed that my daughters favorite chick had a crooked beak. I wanted to find a way to help her. We tried vitamins, hand feeding and she still did not make it. Very sad. But the forum gave us hope and direction to address this chick and I am grateful. She now rests in our backyard under a marker "Lilly".
Chickens have quickly become one of our favorite family pets. We have at this time 3 GLW pullets, 1 GLW rooster(surprise), 3 Ameracauna/EE pullets, 1 wheaten Ameracauna rooster (purebred from craigslist), and 7 Ameracauna/EE chicks. I wanted to get a couple more Purebred Ameracauna hens to breed/show, and some more GLW hens to show.
My husband is busy building/designing the rooster pens.
I may have to join chicken math thread to justify the number of chickens
We also have two American Quarter Horses, and two Rottweilers.
So hello from us and thanks for all the info, still getting used to posting on forums
