Hi everyone! I guess I’ll just answer the questions and then share a few pictures of my foster flock
(1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens? - I am new to incubating, having, and raising chicks. With that said, my brother has a few hens for eggs, and my good friend has a farmette. I got the eggs and borrowed his incubator!
(2) How many chickens do you have right now? I’m fostering 6
(3) What breeds do you have? I believe they’re some mix of Silver Laced Wyandotte, Golden Comet, Ameraucana, Barred Rock, and Asian Black (I think it’s either black sex link or Australorp, honestly)
(4) What are your favorite aspects of raising backyard chickens? So far, it’s seeing their personalities, learning what they need, and watching them grow. I’m hoping that by handling them daily they will remain friendly and happy to see me when they’re on the farm.
(5) What are some of your other hobbies? I knit and crochet, do some light woodworking (I built a 2’ tall extension to the brooder yesterday so there have extra room to fly!), read, pick veggies on my friend’s farm, hang out with his goats, etc.
(6) Tell us about your family, your other pets, your occupation, or anything else you'd like to share. I’ve got a cat named Belle that is 16 years old, and unfortunately don’t have room for a flock (hence fostering!!). I built my first raised bed garden this year that currently has over 100 tomatoes growing plus carrots, radishes, peppers, and snap peas.
(7) Bonus: How did you find BYC, how long have you known about BYC, and what made you finally join our awesome community? I’ve searched for information during the incubation and hatching about brooders, breeds, feed, and anything else I could think to ask! I joined because the chicks are growing and I wanted to share with a community of people who understand my quirky style of fun
The babies got the their first taste of the outside today!! They’re between 1 and 3 days over 2 weeks old.
(Clockwise from top center in the 2nd picture) Dot, Clover, Gerri/Jerry, Squeak, Fin, and Sprite
