Hi. We're just getting started with our hens. Friends of ours decided to cut down on the number of animals they have, so we were given a beautiful flock of Barred Rocks,Red Stars, Rhode IIsland Reds and a couple of Aracondas. They are about 3-4 years old and lay daily. Right now I'm just trying to keep them happy (and away from the road).

I am very excited to have found you! :)

Hello there and welcome to BYC!

Sounds like you have a lovely flock! Great that they are still laying. Some of my girls are 3 and are already slowing down.

Make yourself at home here. If you have any questions about anything, feel free to ask.

Welcome to our flock!

Welcome and good luck!

If the birds wandering into the road is a real issue, you may want to consider building a run or at least running a fence along the road. That situation may not only be hazardous to the chickens, but to drivers as well.

Thank you all for the welcomes! We've had a busy first week with the ladies. Sorry I haven't been back much to post. I'm trying really hard to encourage them to use our 3.5 acres to forage and not cross the road! I've given them lots of blueberries, cracked corn, mealworms, rolled oats.... you name it I've used it to encourage them.
They follow me on what I call "field trips" and they are starting to venture to those places on their own. Any thoughts on how long it will take to make them see crossing the road as not worth it?

Considering the fact that they are chickens and not rocket scientists - I wouldn't think you can train them not to cross the road. They have short attention spans and probably shorter memories- All I can think of, is fencing them off of the road and the cost is probably prohibitive.
