Hello to everyone! So glad to be a part of the BYC club. Last May we decided to get a few baby chicks and start our own little city flock. As most of you have probably experienced, a few turned into 10 within a week. We were told to get a few extras since baby chicks often die and predators always snatch a few. Well not ours! We had 10 happy, healthy birds that rapidly grew into a clucking, crowing flock in a matter of months. Our 1 Speckled Sussex Roo unfortunately became dinner once he attacked our daughter who had handled and raised him from birth. So now we have 9 hens happily running our lives each and every day. Our current flock consists of 2 Wheaton Marans, 2 Speckled Sussex, 2 Rhode Island Reds, 1 Blue Ameraucana, 1 Black Jersey Giant, and 1 Lemon Orpington...all with names, individual personalities, and spoiled ROTTEN!

Two days ago my husband and I decided it was time to expand our flock so we contacted a local farmer who broods for a hatchery and brought home 2 Copper Marans, 1 Salmon Faverolle, 1 White Ameraucana, and 1 Buff Brahma. It was almost impossible to stop at just 5! I am still trolling the local feed store trying to talk myself into needing just one more pip. THIS HOBBY IS ADDICTIVE! Our current girls seem a little unnerved at the peeping coming from the garage, but I hope with lots of help and information from all of the wonderfully experienced poultry keepers here that I can incorporate the new girls in a few months with ease. I look forward to being a part of all the informative posts here at the BYC Forum.

Hello :frow and Welcome To BYC! That is one diverse flock! I like a real assortment also, the more breeds the better. Sorry about the roo, so aggravating when you raise the things from babies and they turn on you. Not sure if you have seen it, but there is a nice article in the Learning Center about adding to your flock (after the quarantine part) https://www.backyardchickens.com/a/adding-to-your-flock Good luck with the new additions!

Welcome to BYC!

Yes, chickens are very addicting! I was warned when I first joined on to BYC and didn't believe a word of it. And well, I should have listened!

Enjoy this new adventure you are on and if you have any questions, that is what we are here for! Welcome to our flock!

Some people believe if you are too friendly with a male they will grow up to treat you like one of the flock - not a human, that they should fear a little and respect. I'm starting to think they are right.
