Howdy folks!
I've been lurking on this site for about a month now, learning a proverbial poop-ton of things about chickens! We've talked about getting chickens for years, but hadn't seriously considered it. Well, after spending a good amount of time chatting with the owners of a great little shop in Hood River, OR, we decided it was time. We brought home five adorable little fuzz balls last Saturday.
Lucy - Blue-laced red wyandotte
Ethel - Silver-laced wyandotte
Laverne - Silver-laced cochin
Shirley- Blue cochin
Carol - Plymouth barred rock
So far, they're healthy, peeping and happy in their brooder bucket in the laundry room. I can only hope that I am able to keep them that way, armed with all of the knowledge gained from all of you great folks. I work with them multiple times a day to get them used to me and used to me handling them. As of now, if I have a treat of any kind in my hand, four of the five will hop right on my hand and dig in. Carol is still warming up to me. I suspect she will never enjoy being handled. Shirley, the blue cochin, wasn't actually on my list of chicks when I made my chick reservations. She was a last minute addition to the group, and so far, is turning out to be my absolute favorite. Sweet, yet plucky and bold, she's the first to check out new things or hop in my hand.
They've been added to a herd of four-legged furries, two Siberian Huskies, two Pembroke Corgis and one strange cat. The furries have shown a GREAT amount of interest in them, enough so that I absolutely will not allow any unsupervised furries in the same room as the chicks. One of the huskies is a squeaky toy fanatic, and I expect that while the chicks are still peeping, she sees them as yet more squeaky toys to eviscerate... Um. No. They're NOT for your playing pleasure!
Their future coop is still in the planning stages, but we have four to five more weeks to have it up and running.
Thank you to all of you who have posted great information for newbies like me!
