My name is Steph (or Atro, I go by either). My husband (hereafter known as TWS for The Wonder Sweetie), our two children, and I live on some acreage in North Alabama. We moved here from Alaska after TWS (see, you know who I am talking about already! We are going to be GREAT friends.) retired from the military. We were in AK for 13 years.

Our farm currently has 12 japanese black tailed whites, with 8 more in the incubator. Those are our "show chickens" ;). We are also looking to expand to egg layers and meat chickens.

Which brings me to an honest question. I read the rules and such but was not sure if discussing "meat chickens" was considered unacceptable. If so, just tell me and I will not mention it again. Not trying to cause waves, we are just halfway between "farm/ranch" and "backyard pets" :)

Anyway, I digress....we have been researching in BYC for so long, that I felt it rude not to introduce myself :) I am excited to be here and eager to get to know y'all.

Have a GREAT night!

Ohh goodness, I did not even introduce the flock! The adults are Chandler, Myka, Victoria, and Elyse. The babies are about 3 weeks old and currently residing in our guest bathtub and are just numbered for the moment. The egglets are still in the incubator, also in the guest bath. No one can visit us for a bit :)

Glad you joined us!

Discussing meat chickens is perfectly fine. There is a special forum section on it, in case you want any tips or have any questions on raising meat birds: Meat Birds ETC

We're glad to have you.

Yes, discussing meat chickens is fine. Lots of people on here butcher their own birds. Good luck with your flock!

Hi

and welcome to the flock. There is a thread on meat birds and also some on the actual processing. Raising them differs somewhat from egg layers, as meat birds grow extremely fast and are processed at a young age. Some people raise dual purpose breeds that can be used in other or both ways.

Welcome to BYC, Steph! Glad you decided to join our flock. A lot of us were lurkers before joining.) Discussing meat chickens is definitely acceptable here at BYC. I've raised meat chickens myself at times in the past, and most of us here at BYC (there are some exceptions) do eat chicken. If you are seriously considering egg layers, I would suggest Black Sex Links, which are hardy and friendly, egg laying machines. There is a reason that the Black Sex Links along with the Red Sex Links are used by laying houses for brown egg production. I've raised them for years and they have been my best layers, laying right through cold winter weather, and consistently churning out over 300 eggs per hen per year. Please feel free to ask any questions you may have. We are here to help in any way we can. Good luck in getting your egg layers and meat birds.
