Hello I really like this site although I'm kind of a newbie. Just trying to find the right king of laying chickens I want : )

Welcome to BYC from NY

You can surf through the chicken forums or go directly to chicken breeds. So glad to have you aboard!

Howdy!
Buff Orpingtons are good layers, along with barred rocks.
I've heard Leghorns are really good layers, but they're not all that pretty.

Hi and welcome from an ex-Winterpegger now living in Colorado!

When we decided to get "into" chickens, we did quite a bit of research. We're restricted to 6 hens where we live, were looking for cold hardy girds that were good layers of large brown eggs. Since we're in an urban setting, I wanted birds that were fairly calm and quiet as well (we have a neighbour who would really fuss if they "bothered" him, LOL) We got red sexlink that were started pullets, and couldn't be happier! They tolerate our extremes of temperatures (I'm told our climate is much like that of Calgary...just farther south), are friendly and curious, but not "cuddly", and are egg laying machines! We get an average of 4 to 5 large to extra large eggs every day...way more than we can eat :) I believe they're a great choice for first time chicken "parents" for those reasons and the fact that they're easy...don't need anything special, and since they're hybrids, they seem to have taken all the best qualities from their parents.
