Just introducing myself... I live in Red Deer, Alberta and am wanting to have 3-4 backyard chickens (that's the maximum allowed in the city here). I'm in "information gathering" mode right now and want to prepare as well as I can ahead of time for the additions to our family. It's just my husband and I and our two Bernese mountain dogs. We have a big backyard that I put raised beds in last year and I would like to add a chicken coop/run to it this year.

I do a lot of gardening here at the house and I also have a big community garden plot about 10 minutes away (by walking).

Currently I'm trying to find a coop or plans for a coop that will house a small flock and then I'd like to figure out what breeds of chickens would be appropriate for city life. (I have a troublesome neighbor who yells at me whenever I operate a power tool in my backyard so I'd like to find a breed that is quiet but also good at laying.)

Looking forward to filling my time reading about people's chicken experiences!!

Hello and welcome to BYC! :frow Glad you joined.
There is no breed that is quiet. If you are permitted chickens, that's the end of it. The girls raise a huge racket when they are laying or getting ready to. Your neighbor needs to understand the laws and if she doesn't like it, it's not your problem.
Enjoy your new adventure!

My ducks and geese are much louder than my chickens. 🐓
