Hatching
I always find myself reading threads in this forum, figured about time to join up.
animal central over here,
currently have 7 ducks, 3(2 males, 1 female) runners, 2(1 male, 1 female) ?, 1(male) ?, and one a recent hatch in my recent venture into a diy incubator.
I was totally amped with the incubator, all the eggs were looking lively, the first four due to hatch, 3 never broke thru inside to pip, died. 1 pipped and is healthy and pesky
next 3 came time for hatch, 2 didn't break thru to pip, 1 pipped but didn't break thru, after hours of youtube'n I assisted, it had just a tiny bit of yolk to absorb.After a little more then a day it kicked away the shell, was lively, but not supper chirpy like the first one,5 day on ,it got sleepy,no energy.. lethargic? 2 hours later it died. I felt a hard mass, about the size of a robin egg in it's belly.
Have 6 eggs of different days in the incubator, but now I am undecided if I want to continue trying to hatch babies. It is freaking depressing to lose babies so close to pipping let alone an adorable little live one.
I spend hours everyday with our ducks and one old chicken, they add enjoyment and purpose. We had two chickens die last year, bummed me out, scared to get another chicken.
There is no luck of the draw it seems when getting ducklings for hens, our male to female ratio is to high. Took me most of a day to work up to butchering one, which surprised me.

3 dogs, a golden lab, rottweiler and a mixed rescue
3 turtles
bearded dragon
leopard gecko
lots of fish
We put in a pond before we had any birds, they sure can make a mess of one. We just finished building the ducks their own pond and tossed the plastic pool.
hobby wise, disc golfing, fishing, hiking... since covid and being holed up, I slipped back into electronics , made a bench power supply from a cube pc case , got some SDR's (software defined radio dongles) made a bunch of different diy antennas. Set up a police radio scanner with two of the sdr's.
