Agree about the "chicken maths" - definitely want to up the proportion of hens to roos! (I suspect the lads are very much in favour of the idea, too!) Unfortunately, we always seem to have at least one convalescent, so we've held off on introducing more until we know they're stronger. Of course, by that time, there's probably another patient. It will happen, though - we're fortunate to have enough space!

Greetings from Ireland!

Lurker for a couple of years (tended to look here when there were problems ) but finally decided to take the plunge and register!

Possibly slightly unusual in that most of our family (most definitely "family", not "flock"!) came to us as refugees of one sort or another; had thought about getting a couple of chickens on and off for a few years, then one simply moved in - the sole survivor of a dog attack on a neighbour's coop and (perhaps understandably) flatly refused to go back, so welcome to your new home Katie! A few months later, we decided to get her a friend. Everyone knows that hens are happier with company, right? Well, everyone except Katie, apparently. Cue a week of very vociferously pointing out to all and sundry that we really ought to have consulted her first. No one was spared her opinion; the postman was particularly bemused!

Eventually things settled down and Katie and Millie became inseparable - so there we were with two hybrid hens and a lovely looking light Sussex. Er, hang on - where did she come from? One night we put the girls to bed, next morning there's a newcomer perched on the coop. OK - there's a breeder down the road, and we're fairly sure he has Sussex, so we pop over to ask. No hens missing, so after asking around a bit more, we seem to have acquired hen number three - Susie the Sussex. Which was grand - until "she" started crowing…

You guessed it - Susie the Sussex turned out to be a boy named Soo (the Accidental Roo) - a rooster who came into our yard. He seems destined to live his life through novelty songs…

Katie and Millie are both gone now - and are much missed. In the meantime we've somehow acquired a delightful splash rosecomb bantam (dubbed Tyson, which says everything you need to know about his attitude!), a bantam brahma (another rooster, despite the assurances of the seller, and hence another very inappropriate name - Kiki!) two more hybrids (Tilly and Cissie) and Miss Bella - an orphaned white silkie.

Anyway - that's how things stand. Looking forward to being a part of this community rather than simply culling info and giving nothing back.
