Hello to all here at the BYC! My husband and I are making our mid-life crisis decision and are finally moving to the country! House is sold, boxes are packed, and new country home is set for close next week. However, when we do arrive to our new home... the permanent chicken coop may have residents. This is terrifying to us, as we weren't 'jumping in the deep end without learning to swim first', but life is sometimes funny. Hilarious even.
So here we are catching up on important info in case our little friends will be there when we arrive. Then we can, "say hello to my little friend" and know a smidgen of what to do.

Congratulations on your new home, and welcome to BYC. Click on 'The Learning Center' located at the top of the page, go to the forums, study and question away. You'll do fine.

glad you have joined us.

Wish the former owner could introduce you to your new flock, but if not wanted you to be aware.

Chickens can recognize not only their flock members but us humans. They are fearful of strangers, so don't get worried if they act upset and are flighty and chatty when you meet them. Once they know you they will always know and adore you.

Good luck with the move and new adventure.

Feel free to post questions, we're here to help.

Thank you for the replies! After a day and a half of reading, I can already see improvements to make on their living conditions. The 4 chickens (aka The Gang), were so cute when we came to see the property and I did get to talk to the owners after the home inspection. English is not their first language (barely their second) and communication is our big hurtle when learning about them.

I'm thankful that there is a place like your BYC that helps me.... AND them! Our children are our cats (inside only), and taking on new family members is a daunting task. Especially when you don't know anything about them! The Gang were so much fun to watch running around the yard and pen and would almost come to me when out! Unfortunately for my husband, I don't believe I'll be able to cook chicken for him again!

Not an accident, I think it was meant to be. In no time you will be showing relatives and friends your new step chickens. Hope we get to see photos too.
