Well, I had been planing to raise quail.... Still am BUT. Last week my mother found a bunch baby chicks by the side of the road and well, she gathered them all up. The idea of having chickens was a no go with my dad. I live live next door, and my hubby had no problem with them coming to live here. I however have no clue what to do with these little things and one died this morning.

They are currently in a LARGE dog carrier, with plans to move them to a larger area today that should give them about 2 sq each with warming lamp.

Here is my problem....... I think they have a problem, they don't look right to me. Then I really dont know what they are suppose to look like either. I do no know how old these little guys are or anything. Their new home will have wood shavings in it because that is what the feed store sold me. They are eatting baby chicken food...starter? at the moment. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

! Pleased you joined us! I think what you have there are a clutch of Cornish X meat chicks. You are correct, they don't look "right" compared to other chickens but this is exactly what Cornish X are supposed to look like - they have bald patches and the distended rear end because they grow so fast and can't keep up with feather production to cover their rapidly expanding bodies. So, I think you are good to go! Good luck to you, your chickens and your quail!

Thank you so much for your quick reply, I feel so much better now. I am holding off calling my mom to tell her she has meat chickens as she was so looking forward to all the eggs. My 22 year old is even working out plans to build a chicken coop in the yard. Should I add a couple egg laying chicks to the batch and if so what do you suggest?

OMG! I just looked up the cornish X. I need to replace these with Egg Layers. These guys are meat ready in like 8 weeks, at 12 weeks they can get to fat to get around or break legs. My mother is going to be mortified. Okay, suggestions on how to find these little guys a home?

Update on the chicks. Well, I am still not sure what they are or how old but they are growing. Started out when 10 now we have 7, the smaller ones that did not appear to grow at all died.
They have food 24/7 and water. We are now refilling the containers several times a day..... well the water more because I think they think its the toilet. Built a warmer (brooding box?) out of an old cupboard and added a light for warmth and it seems to have worked well. Working on the coop. Some pictures..

They knocked the food over, again

He or she likes to be the center of attention, very friendly

It's windy outside and a bit of a chill, think they got cold when I opened things up to feed and water. Feathers all fluffed out.

What cuties! Hasn't this wind been horrible? I am out in Boron and the sand that has been blowing around has driven me mad! We had to repair our back gate today after it blew over yesterday. Thank goodness the dogs did not run away! I am going to be shopping in Victorville tomorrow for pet food and I will be thinking of you and your little brood :)
