Well if you want brown eggs, just about any of the American breeds (Plymouth Rocks, RI. Reds, Javas, Giants, to name a few) or Asiatic (Cochins, Langshans, Brahmas) would work. Orpingtons and Australorps from the English class too.
If you want Dark brown eggs, Barnevelders, Welsummers, Marans wold work. As jenjscott mentioned a lot of the dark egg layers have been so selected for egg color that type and color of the bird itself has been neglected. I'd suggest Welsummers but that is just my opinion.
A lot of choosing what breed has to do with personal preferences such as feathered legs, comb type, rarity, and other characteristics. I've worked with a lot of the different breeds and most of the dual purpose breeds are quite docile naturally, or can be if they are just handled minimally.
