Hi we have just relocated from big city Melbourne to the country in Bega, New South Wales. Of course we must have chickens while living in the country. A workmate of mine has given us three laying hens who are mixed breed. So far we seem to get two eggs a day (when my dog doesn't break in and eat them- must improve fencing). We have a family of 5 (people not chooks) and according to the 'Uncle Sam patriotic duty' advertisement I saw, we need 7 more. So going to start hunting around on your website for information on adding more chickens to the flock. Thanks for such a great website, I love it here already!

Welcome to BYC!

You might enjoy dropping in on your country thread, here's a link to get you there:

Maybe someone on the thread can give you a tip on where to get more birds.

When you do find more chickens, isolate the new ones for about 30 days to be sure they are healthy and not passing something on to your existing girls. Then you can separate the two groups with wire or netting so they can 'see but not touch' for 2-3 weeks. That will give everyone a chance to get used to each other and should minimize serious skirmishes while a new pecking order is worked out.

Good luck with your flock, it's nice to have you here!
