Hi all,

Just posting a quick introduction of myself. I live in Sydney Australia, and after years of waiting I've finally been able to get some chickens again - unfortunately, every man and his dog now wants backyard chickens and there are waiting lists lol I live in suburbia but dream of one day living my life on the farm.

(1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens?
I've owned chickens before (two meat birds - long story!) and rescued a muscovy duck (another story) but now is the first time I have chosen my chickens.

(2) How many chickens do you have right now?

7 total but I am eager for more (2 still are coming). 3 hens are about 1 year old and four 2 week olds in a brooder (two coming will be week olds).

(3) What breeds do you have?

3 Mixed Hens (Wyandotte x Barnevelder plus two unknown mixes) and young female chicks: 1 Barred Plymouth Rock, 1 "Platinum" Sussex, 1 Barnevelder (hopefully - might be a Wyandotte though) & 1 Brown Leghorn. I will also be getting a Black Brahma and a Speckled Sussex next month.

(4) What are your favorite aspects of raising backyard chickens?

Holding them, the eggs are great but I just love to hold chickens and pat their beautful feathers. And watching them scratch for food, or fluff up then shake or when they zoom across the yard at full speed flapping madly (mine are free ranged). I often just sit in the backyard with my morning coffee and watch the hens for an hour then come inside and watch the chicks in the brooder for a hour too (probably creeps them all out).

(5) What are some of your other hobbies?

Horses and Horse Colour Genetics (I'm very knowledgable with horse genetics - can spew the genetic string of any colour or the colour knowing only the genes). I also love my cats (all 13 of them haha), and dogs (just two) and Gaming. I will be looking into chicken genetics too (not to breed because I live in suburbia and of course, not allowed roosters but because I am curious about what makes colours) and during the quiet nights I watch ant keeping on yourtube.

(6) Tell us about your family, your other pets, your occupation, or anything else you'd like to share.

I work as admin in real estate, not married and have no children of my own, so plenty of time but I do own an Andalusian mare and a QH Appaloosa mare plus rescue cats (I seem to have 'sucker for lost cats' stuck to my forehead).

(7) Bonus: How did you find BYC, how long have you known about BYC, and what made you finally join our awesome community? :D

After MANY MANY chicken related searches, this forum always popped up with the right answers (or just good discussions). I've only known about the forum for a month now though and wanted to join because I am a bit of a hermit and don't normally socialise outside of work - 2020 is my year to step out of my comfort zone.

PS: Can't wait to get lost in the forums here.
