I brought home my first ever, baby chicks last week. I have helped with full grown layers before and loved it. Now it's time to have my own flock. They week old chicks are happily settled in the coop, with a heat lamp to keep them warm while it snows today. A few of them have figured out how to fly out of the tub they are in but, I have noticed that they can also fly back in so, I'm not terribly worried about it. They are all looking good, are healthy, no big problems I can see as of yet. I hope they all stay that way!!

! Great to have you here! My gal is from Montana...and reminds of frequently with the Kansas, heat and humidity. Good luck to you and your flock!

Thanks so much! I've never been to Kansas. I love it up here, even on days like today...blowing snow and 30 degrees cooler than yesterday! Our temps will be dipping into the teens overnight so, we are going to add a second lamp to the coop today. We'll hang it off to to other side to provide some warmth to any of the chicks who escape from the tub and may need it. I think that if we make it through the next 2 days with them, they will be fine! They are much hardier than I expected!! We have already added extra waterers and feeders for the ones who keep getting out. So far, so good!!

I think anywhere one grows up is "home." I love Kansas because everything I like to do is here. Much of it looks like eastern Montana if that gives you a visual - but flatter! But it's Home on the Range to me! I live to visit places but I always come back. Keep those chicks warm tonight!

Welcome to BYC!!

could you put a wire top (window screen, etc.) on the brooder, that would keep your chicks safely where they belong. If the escapists are prancing around they may fall sleep without realizing there is a second lamp putting heat on the outside for them.

All is well this morning! Thank you all for the helpful tips! We have made the ones who want out an enclosed area and they are happy as can be! Everyone survived the very low overnight temps! I am learning that these little guys are much hardier than I had thought they would be :)
