Hello from Baton Rouge, LA!

I live in Baton Rouge also and have chickens. You seem to have had your fair share of illnesses my goodness. I have three that are 17 months old and two that are 5-1/2 months old. All are doing great.

Anyway, to answer your question about a vet. Dodge City Animal Hospital in Denham Springs has a vet the specializes in birds, and will treat chickens.

Also, the other alternative, albeit expensive, is the LSU Vet School, they treat everything from cats to farm animals.

Hello Jewelofthesky! Welcome to BYC! It's great to hear from a fellow chicken keeper in Baton Rouge! Thank you so much for the info on the vets. I've tried calling LSU before, but they told me they don't treat chickens. This may have been because it was the weekend and they just didn't have an avian specialist on call.

Thanks to everyone for being so welcoming. There sure are a lot of BYC'ers from California!

Luckly, all of my issues have resolved! Pectin's leg has made a full recovery and my others are looking and acting normal after the duramycin! I've even added 5 more silkies to the bunch after a tree fell on their mom's barn during Hurricane Isaac

. I have to say, I was impressed that the previous owner managed to save all of her chickens, rabbits, geese, ducks, and pigeons by running back and forth to the barn while the tree was swaying in the storm

. I'm keeping her and everyone affected in my thoughts.

In other news, I've been stalking my backyard with a flashlight every night...the blood sucking monster is back. Two nights in a row I've caught a glimpse of a juvenile opossum in my backyard. First time I saw him, I tree'd him like a coon hound; quiet literally actually. I chased him and barked at him. I'm not as crazy as I sound though, this causes my big australian shepherd mix to take interest and to patrol the yard herself. The next night Mrs. Sippi (my dog) saw him and ran him off. My ladies and gentlemen have been on lock-down in their house at night. Luckly, its been cool at night.

I've also started a second flock of bantam cochins. I have some milli fleurs, frizzles, and jap bantams.

Even better news: I got my first egg,

along with a second, third, and forth egg! I wish I knew who to thank for my future omlet, but this lady just leaves her eggs lying around the run despite the many nesting areas that I have for them. Every afternoon I have a rather easy easter egg hunt.

Thanks again everyone and good luck to your flocks!

Good to know that your chickens are doing better, and laying eggs. You might try putting platic eggs or golf balls in their nesting area to encourage them to lay there. You must not live in the city limits because of the number of chickens you have. I wish I could have more, but we're only supposed to have three.
