Hi folk at Backyard Chickens,
I'm Tracey and the guardian of a flock of five chickens. While I'm new to chicken owning we had chickens for quite a few years when I was a kid. My husband Andrew also had chickens as a kid.
We have had an interesting road to get to the current line up of chickens. Mid September (Spring here in New Zealand) we got five day old chicks. Luckily, the deal was that we could return any lads to the breeder as we ended up with 4 cockerels (one Splash Orpington, two Rhode Island Reds and a Light Sussex). I tell you - I was glued to backyard chicken trying to convince myself these guys were not cockerels. All lovely young lads but we're in a no rooster area - let alone four!!! Incidentally, the Orpington rooster had claws on his wings! Is that normal?
Our only pullet was Miss Chilli Mocha the Golden Laced Wyandotte. The lovely breeder took the cockerels back and we got another 4 pullets - all a few weeks younger than our Mocha. So the current line up is:

And finally - our youngest, Miss Padme Amidala
I need to get these guys some proper housing before our Winter which in Wellington is relatively mild but wet and windy. My current goal is to get this sorted now during the Christmas holidays while I have the time and before our Mocha (who is 15 weeks ) starts thinking about laying.
I'm loving backyard chicken - there is so much going on!

Hi there, I have 3 Pekin ducks, however my dad is interested in getting chickens next year sometime. He wants laying chickens. What breeds do u recommend and how many?
I'm new to this game so I'm not really in a position yet to make recommendations but there are plenty of people on this site that could. I love Pekin ducks! When I was a kid my mum hatched out some duck eggs under one of our bantam hens!
