Hello from Boston

If you do decide on house chickens - there is a very good thread on byc called "People with housechickens."

A friend of mine has had house chickens for over 20 yrs. Right now she has 2 silkies and 2 seramas, both breeds that accept confinement and do well inside. My friends birds watch tv with her every night, and keep vigil by the front door like dogs, when she is away from home.

If you decide to try and have "stealth" chickens outdoors - please have a plan B, in case the neighbors decide to complain and you have to rehome them.

Thank you, everyone!! You guys are great! 6of6chicks, I saw that but I when I looked at this http://www.bostonredevelopmentauthority.org/getattachment/4d013882-a5cc-4f2e-bc88-2a0fc3072ab6 I got more confused. It seems like "allowed" means only in certain areas, which are probably 1% of the whole city of Boston. I live in the pink area, which is "forbidden!" I still haven't heard from anyone yet and I'm still hopeful! I will keep you all posted. Thanks again!

I WANT CHICKENS!!!!

Sorry! Should have known it wouldn't be that simple!

That's the craziest map! I wonder why so much of it is forbidden? And why would they lump chickens and bees together? I can certainly see bees as a hazard, but chickens? Weird!

Anyway - best of luck getting your chickens! Where there's a will, there's a way - you've definitely got the will, so there must be a way!!

I finally talked to someone from the Boston Redevelopment Authority and the answer is NO!!! Chickens are forbidden in any of the residential areas in Boston, even the not very densely populated neighborhoods. And I live in West Roxbury, which is often referred to as "the suburb within the city." The lady said that I can go ahead and apply for a permit. They will deny it. I then can apply for a variance and I'll have to appear before a zoning hearing board. I might have a very small chance to get approved. That sounds way too complicated for me right now. As for a house chicken, I think I'll wait because I don't know what I'm doing yet. Oh, she also said that I can try to do it under the radar but they will take the chickens away if they find out. You can read this story that happened two miles from my house two years ago. Thanks everyone for your kind words!!!

So sorry to hear you can't keep chickens. Some areas of the country are just not sophisticated enough for chickens! (snubs nose)!!!

Well, maybe someday you will feel the urge to fight this. Either that or move out into the country. Good luck and keep us posted on how all this goes over eventually! :)
