Very new to the chicken world, just started. My name is Christopher Rodriguez and one of my parents friend just handed me down three roosters, all grew up as eggs all together, as of right now they are not fighting. I have (2) Rhode Island Reds and (1) Americana. I plan to get about 37 laying hens, would it be okay to put all three roosters together with all the hens or should I split them? I know their is a lot of information here and I plan to do my research on the type of hens I will get. I like dual purpose birds.

Welcome to the BYC flock! We are glad you joined us!

As long as you have at least 8-10 hens per rooster, you should be fine. So, 3 roosters to 37 hens is a good ratio. The fact that the roosters were also raised together will help as they will already have their pecking order established.

However, if at some point you would like to raise chicks, and you would like to ensure they are a specific breed, rather than a barnyard mix, you will want to separate them by breed.

Hi :welcome

Glad you could join the flock! I too agree 37 hens should be enough for your 3 Roos. If you have not decided on breed of hens you would like you can drop by the breed section for lots of reviews on the different hens you could get. Here is the link if you have not dropped by ~ https://www.backyardchickens.com/products/category/chicken-breeds

Wishing you the very best of luck in the future and enjoy BYC :frow

Thank you, appreciate the feedback. I agree, I was a little surprised when they said they had three rooster and all in the same coop. This was before I was aware that they were all raised together.

I was planning to have a mixture to start; however, I am planning to separate if I want a specific breed. I am looking at the following hens Rhode Island Reds, Barred Plymouth Rock, Golden Comet, white Leghorn and Dominque. I would pair the Rhode Island Reds with the Rhode Island Red roosters. I am thinking of putting the Americana with Barred Plymouth Rok or Dominique but I am not sure if it would be a good combination.

Hi Christopher, welcome to BYC!

That was nice of your parent's friend to help you get started with the 3 roosters. I agree, you should be fine with that rooster to hen ratio. You're certainly going to end up with a lot of poultry! I like the breeds you've mentioned, they should all be good reliable egg layers for you.

Thanks for joining us and good luck with all your plans!
